Poetry Saturday . . . A Child's Offering

The wise may bring their learning,
The rich may bring their wealth,
And some may bring their greatness,
And some bring strength and health;
We, too, would bring our treasures
To offer to the king;
We have no wealth or learning;
What shall we children bring?

We'll bring Him hearts that love Him;
We'll bring Him thankful praise,
And young souls meekly striving
To walk in Holy ways;
And these shall be the treasures
We offer to the King,
And these are gifts that even
The poorest child may bring.

We'll bring the little duties
We have to do each day;
We'll try our best to please Him,
At home, at school, at play:
And better are these treasures
To offer to our king,
Than richest gifts without them;
Yet these a child may bring.

I think I remember singing this poem as a hymn in Sunday School when I was a child.  Does anyone else remember doing this???  I am not sure.  I found it this morning in one of my poetry books and it seemed so very familiar.

The Scriptures tell us that we must humble ourselves and become as children to enter the kingdom of  Heaven:

“Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3–4).

When I think of a child's faith . . . I can see it is pure and unpretentious . . . believing in all things, unquestioning . . . they are teachable and not puffed up with pride.  They trust.  They have believing hearts, full of faith and are receptive to feelings of the Spirit. They exemplify humility, obedience, and love. They are often the first to love . . . and the first to forgive.  We can learn much from their example.

You will have to turn off the music below to listen to this simple hymn.  It is so beautiful and one of my favourites.  How many of us have questioned from time to time Heavenly Father's presence in our lives.  There are times that it can feel like He is very far away . . . but I can promise you that this simply is not true.  He is always there . . . waiting for us to come to Him with childlike faith and love and trust . . .  willing to give our all in humility and obedience.

“He (God) loves us because He is filled with an infinite measure of holy, pure, and indescribable love. We are important to God not because of our résumé but because we are His children. He loves every one of us, even those who are flawed, rejected, awkward, sorrowful, or broken. God's love is so great that He loves even the proud, the selfish, the arrogant, and the wicked. What this means is that, regardless of our current state, there is hope for us. No matter our distress, no matter our sorrow, no matter our mistakes, our infinitely compassionate Heavenly Father desires that we draw near to Him so that He can draw near to us.” ― Dieter F.
